The 2017-18 NHL season is still quite a distance away. The first game of the regular season won’t start until October 4th , but that hasn’t stopped some from predicting the next Stanley Cup Champion.

Online Sportsbook Bovada has released its odds for NHL futures betting and the defending champion Pittsburgh Penguins are at the top of the list. Sports bookies have based their odds on hours of research to come up with their list of cup contenders. But that isn’t the only thing that has gone into their selections, as drafts, free agent signings and the returning of key players have also gone into the equation.

The Pittsburgh Penguins are favored by odds makers to win their third straight Stanley Cup as the top team at the odds table at +700 (meaning a bettors wager of $100 receives a $700 payout with a win). In a surprise move, bookmakers have placed the Edmonton Oilers as its second favorite to win the Stanley Cup at +1000. Last season, the Oilers made it to the second round of the playoffs before being knocked out by Anaheim. That hasn’t stopped Edmonton from receiving the second-best odds of the league’s 31 teams.

Some may question how the Oilers were factored at such great odds, but the return of last season’s NHL Most Valuable Player, Connor McDavid, has influenced sports bookies to place the Canadian club near the top. In a more surprising selection, bookies are have placed the Dallas Stars as the fourth most likely team to take home Lord Stanley in 2017-18. Dallas didn’t even make the playoffs last season, finishing with 79 points and a massive –39 goal differential, but a flurry of moves has set up the the Stars for another run for cup with odds set at +1200 to bring the greatest trophy in all of sports back to the Lone Star State.

At the opposite end of the NHL Stanley Cup odds table sits the league’s newest franchise, the Vegas Golden Knights. The new boys of the NHL are at odds of +10000, which means any bettor that lays down $100 will take home $10,000 if the Golden Knights can lift the cup in year one.

The Golden Knights aren’t the only team at such long odds with the Arizona Coyotes, Detroit Red Wings, Colorado Avalanche, New Jersey Devils and Vancouver Canucks all listed at +10000.

Some may question the importance of sports betting odds in the run-up to the NHL season but Sportsbooks are notorious for having a great eye for the game — and that is why they are able to consistently adjust the odds year after year.

In May 2017, following the first round of the NHL Playoffs, the Penguins were given the best odds, or lowest payout, to win the Stanley Cup and lo and behold Pittsburgh staked claim to their fifth title in franchise history a few
weeks later.

Pittsburgh spent much of this past season near the top of the odds table and the Penguins arguably will have the best shot at a “Three-Peat” come puck drop again this October.
