OneHockey Crowns New Champions in Syracuse

New champions were crowned on Sunday afternoon in the OneHockey Shootout Tournament in Syracuse, New York.

OneHockey has been hosting organized and competitive ice hockey tournaments in North America and Canada since 2003 and have grown from hosting four tournaments annually to more than 20 in just three years. OneHockey was established by hosting AAA elite boys tournaments and have since added AA, A and B/House level events.

OneHockey will attempt to set a new Guinness World Record for the largest tournament ever at its 2018 Holiday Invite and is set on featuring as many as 1,000 teams in both boys and girls divisions with 23,000 players from 10 countries on 75 different rinks.

Over the course of the past few months OneHockey has featured tournaments Indiana, Minnesota, Illinois, Pennsylvania and most recently in Syracuse, New York.

This weekend’s tournament showcased 16 teams from the Bantam AA, Bantam A, Peewee A, and Squirt A divisions.

Syracuse, New York Tournament Champions

Bantam AA Championship: Rochester Monarchs (NY) 2, St. Lawrence Thunder (NY) 0

Christopher Hammerle and Rowan Palen each found the back of the net in the first period to ignite the Rochester Monarchs (NY) to a 2-0 shutout victory over the St. Lawrence Thunder (NY) to claim the Bantam AA championship title.

Hammerle and Palen each struck in the first period and it was the Monarchs defense that took care of the rest.

Rochester relied heavily on its defense throughout the entire tournament and was able to outscore its opponents 14-8, while posting three shutouts.

After losing 7-1 against the same St. Lawrence Thunder team on Saturday, the Monarchs responded with a 9-0 blanking of the Northumberland Nighthawks (Ontario) in the semifinals on Sunday morning, before getting its revenge against the Thunder and capturing the championship gold.

Hammerle led the Monarchs with four goals and five points throughout the tournament and Palen, Ryan Klice, Joseph Lemieux, Benjamin Pearson and Mitchell Zanon each found the back of the net twice. Ryan Klice and Joe Wild were the MVPs for the champion Monarchs.

The Thunder posted a 4-1 record in tournament play, with its only loss coming in the championship game, and outscored its opponents 27-3.

Trent King powered the Thunder with a team high six goals and eight points and Brody VanBuren and Ryley Ashley each had seven points. Evan White and Trent King were the MVPs for the Thunder.

Bantam A Championship: West End Vegas Knights (Ontario) 5, Geneva Cyclones (Illinois) 3

Anthony Tanouchev scored a hat trick and recorded four points to power the West End Vegas Knights from Ontario, Canada to a 5-3 victory over the Geneva Cyclones (Illinois). All eight goals were scored in the opening period and it was Tanouchev’s hat trick that proved to be the ultimate demise of the Cyclones.

Justin Green had a goal and four points for the Vegas Knights and Russell Kuo also found the back of the net.

Logan Voress, Heath Powers and Graham Robertson each struck in the loss for the Cyclones.

The Vegas Knights posted a 4-1 record in the tournament, with its only loss coming against the same Geneva Cyclones team on opening night, but since reeled off four straight wins in route to the championship and outscored its opponents 28-11.

Green and Tanouchev were both named Co-MVP’s of the tournament.

Green finished with a team high 14 points (6 G, 8 A) and Tanouchev struck for 10 points, with a team high eight goals.

Robertson had a team high four goals and 10 points for the Cyclones.

The Cyclones only loss came in the championship game on Sunday and posted a 4-1 record, while outscoring its opponents 29-12.

Peewee A Championship: Syracuse Nationals Selects (NY) 6, Cumberland Dukes (Ontario) 5

The Syracuse Nationals Selects (NY) were able to defend their home turf in Syracuse and knocked off the Cumberland Dukes (Ontario) 6-5 to win the Peewee A championship.

Nick Shaw played like a man possessed for Syracuse and netted a hat trick and five points and Kaleb DeLuca and Logan Gilbert each struck for a goal and an assist. Cam Schiebler also found the back of the net for the Nationals and Liam Murphy had 10 saves to pick up the win in net.

Alexander Felix had two goals in the loss for the Dukes and Nicolas Simard, Clark O’Connor and Justin Raymond each found the back of the net.

Syracuse had no problem finding the back of the net on Sunday and the Nationals erupted for 12 goals in a shutout victory over the West Seneca Wings (NY) earlier in the day to reach the title game.

The National Selects were a perfect 5-0 in tournament play and outscored their opponents 47-9, which was a tournament high.

For Cumberland, it was not a dominant tournament by any means, posting a 3-2 record, but the Dukes got the timing right, winning three-straight entering the championship, including a 12-1 triumph over the New Jersey Titans.

Shaw and DeLuca were named the MVP’s for the champions from Syracuse and Raymond (5 G, 4 A) and Simard (7 G, 3 A) were the MVP’s for the finalist Dukes. Shaw led the tournament with 12 goals and 25 points for the Nationals Selects and DeLuca had eight goals and 15 points.

Squirt A Championship: Rome Grizzlies (NY) 3, Kingston Canadians (Ontario) 0

Shane Townsend struck for two goals to ignite the Rome Grizzlies from New York to a 3-0 victory over the Kingston Canadians (Ontario) to capture the Squirt A championship.

The Grizzlies were nothing short of dominant throughout the whole tournament, outscoring its opponents 29-6 and posted two shutouts.

Sean Graziano also found the back of the net in the victory for Rome and Tanner Spina had two assists.

The Grizzlies knocked off the Cumberland Jr. Grads Minor (Ontario) 5-0 in the semifinals earlier in the day and it was once again Graziano doing the damage with two goals and Tyler Lokker had two goals and an assist.

Lokker (9 G, 3 A) and Will Leonard (4 G, 1 A) were named MVP’s for the Squirt A champion Grizzlies. Aiden Hamilton (6 G) and Daniel Brown (5 A) were the MVP’s from the finalist Kingston Canadians.
