It went to sudden-death overtime before it was finally decided as New Trier High School edged Loyola Academy, 2-1, in double overtime to capture the second annual High School/Midget Prep Invitational hosted by 200×85 LLC and ProStock Hockey this past weekend in Mount Prospect, IL.
John Robinson’s unassisted goal, with 4:03 left in the fifth period of play, lifted New Trier High School of Winnetka, Illinois to victory over Loyola Academy of Wilmette, Illinois, 2-1, in the championship bout of the Varsity High School Prep and Midget AAA/AA tournament on Sunday, December 10 at Mount Prospect Ice Arena.
Brian Dolby gave New Trier a 1-0 lead with 9:27 remaining in the second period, assisted by Patrick Okeefe.
The goal stood until Cooper Prawdzik connected with just 1:22 remaining in regulation to tie the score at 1-1 and force overtime. Nicholas Liebers assisted on the game-tying goal.
This year saw the top four Illinois high school hockey teams — #1 New Trier, #2 Providence, #3 Benet Academy and #4 Loyola Academy — compete along with the top-ranked team from California, Santa Margarita, as well as top programs from Colorado (Resurrection Christian), Minnesota (St.Thomas Academy), Iowa (Iowa Wild) and North Carolina (NC Force). Last year champions were Red Bull Academy from Austria.
