Samuel Fishteyn had a hand in three of his team’s four goals as the junior collected two goals and an assist to lead Monroe Township to a 4-2 victory over Southern Regional at the Jersey Shore Arena in Wall.

After Paul Keyes gave Southern a 1-0 lead 7:55 into the game, Fishteyn and Kyle Lange set up Michael Conover just 38 seconds into the second period to tie the game at 1-1.

Southern, which advanced all the way to the NJSIAA Public A Quarterfinals last season, took the lead once again when David Lytle finished the play started by Justin Braun to regain a 2-1 advantage, but Fishteyn struck back 1:30 off the ensuing faceoff to tie the game back up, 2-2. Lange and Gleb Veremyev assisted on the game-tying goal.

With 7:41 left in the second period, Monroe took its first lead of the game when Lange scored the go-ahead goal, assisted by Veremyev.

Fishteyn capped the scoring with his second goal of the game with 3:46 remaining in regulation.

“Thought our team did a good job of sustaining pressure on them with our forecheck and limiting their scoring opportunities,” Monroe coach Jerry Minter said. “Overall, our players did a great job of sticking to our brand of hockey.

“Seniors Kyle Lange and Michael Conover along with junior Sam Fishteyn played phenomenal, offensively,” Minter said. “Our three defensemen, (Matthew) Skobelev, (Bryant) Skurbe and (Gleb) Veremyev logged a lot of minutes and played smart hockey and freshman goalie Marino Lupo made big saves when needed.”

Lange and Fishteyn each picked up three points in the victory, while Veremyev picked up a pair of assists. Marino Lugo finished with 18 saves for Monroe, which evens its record at 1-1 after falling to Wall Township, 4-3, in its season-opener on Nov. 29. Monroe is looking to improve upon its 13-11 record last winter.

Southern Regional falls to 0-2 after falling to Wall Township, 6-2, in its season-opener on Nov. 27. The Manahawkin school was 18-8-1 last season.
