Down by one after two periods of play, Manasquan-Point Pleasant Beach rallied for three unanswered goals in the third period to pull out a 6-4 victory over Manalapan at the Jersey Shore Arena in Wall on Wednesday night.
Aidan Tolnai tied the game at 4-4 just 3:46 into the third period before delivering the go-ahead goal with 3:20 remaining in regulation as the Manasquan-Point Pleasant Beach co-op took its first lead of the game. Tolnai, who scored four goals in the game, completed a natural hat trick with his third goal in the final frame with an empty-netter with 1:01 left.
The three unanswered goals in the third — all of the stick of the junior Tolnai — erased deficits of 2-1 after one and 4-3 after two.
Freddie Brutto and Jake Caballero broke the ice with a pair of goals 3:48 apart within the opening half of the first period as Manalapan took a 2-0 lead. But Michael Farinacci’s power-play goal, assisted by Liam Stark with 45 seconds left in the first period, cut the deficit to one after one for Manasquan.
Tolnai made no mistake tying the game at 2-2 just 36 seconds into the second period with his first of four goals in the game, but Caballero set up Ben Tartakovsky 2:09 later as Manalapan regained the lead.
Once again, Manasquan battled back to tie the game at 3-3 off Alec Wells’ goal at 11:40, but Tartakovsky ensured Manalapan would take a 4-3 lead into the second intermission with his power-play goal — and second of the game — with 3:32 on the clock.
It was all Manasquan-Point Pleasant Beach in the third and final frame, however, behind Tolnai who added his 6th, 7th and 8th goals of the season to pull out the victory.
