Anthony Galante scored twice and Dante Balsamo added a goal and three assists as Marlboro-Holmdel defeated Jackson Memorial, 5-1, at the Jersey Shore Arena in Wall.
The stats did not tell the whole story, however, as both teams — even one of the goaltenders — got into a physical altercation that sent the crowd into a frenzy.
Casey Cavasin added a goal and two assists for Marlboro-Holmdel, which responded with five unanswered goals after Luke Satkowski opened the scoring for Jackson Memorial 10:33 into the game.
Thomas Zembricki also scored for Marlboro, capping the scoring with 2:13 remaining in regulation.
Jason Williams stood tall with 27 saves on 28 shots for Marlboro in between the pipes. Matthew Pousson registered 31 saves in net for Jackson Memorial.
“At least nobody got killed,” Jackson Memorial coach Larry Clayton said with a laugh.
“After two games things are starting to shake out. Players are starting to establish themselves, but it’s early,” the fifth-year coach said. “A lot of games left to play.”
After tying Morristown, 1-1, on Sunday, Jackson Memorial is 0-1-1 after two games.
Last night’s tilt was the season-opener for Marlboro-Holmdel, which will take on Red Bank Catholic tonight at 8:15 p.m.
