DALLAS — For the 217 players that heard their name called — it was a dream come true.

A record 57 players with ties to the United States Hockey League were drafted and another 67 players from 32 NCAA schools were selected — the most since 2007 — but the story from the 2018 NHL Draft June 22-23 at American Airlines Center in Dallas, TX, was the amount of Europeans that were selected.

Above and beyond, prospects from Sweden, Finland, the Czech Republic and the Russian Federation littered 2018 NHL draft boards beginning with franchise defenseman Rasmus Dahlin, whom the Buffalo Sabres selected first overall.

Dahlin (6’3”, 185 lbs.), a fluid puck-moving defenseman who has drawn comparisons to fellow countryman Erik Karlsson of the Ottawa Senators, amassed eight goals and 23 points in 67 regular-season games for Frölunda of the Swedish Hockey League, adding eight points in 20 postseason games.

A native of Lidköping, Sweden, Dahlin won a silver medal at the 2018 IIHF World Junior Championship in Buffalo, recording six points and a plus-7 rating while averaging 23:08 of ice time helping earn him “Best Defenseman” honors.

Dahlin also represented Sweden at the 2017 IIHF World Junior Championship at age 16, and, at 17, was the youngest player at the 2018 Olympic Games in PyeongChang, South Korea.

With the selection, Dahlin joins Mats Sundin (Quebec Nordiques, 1989) as the second Swede ever selected first overall in the NHL Draft. He is the third player to be selected first overall by the Sabres, joining Gilbert Perreault (1970) and Pierre Turgeon (1987).

NHL Bloodlines continued to trend at the 2018 NHL Draft as 14 players whose fathers were drafted or played in The League were selected. Beginning with the Ottawa Senators in the first round, Canada’s capitol city tabbed Brady Tkachuk fourth overall. The son of long-time St. Louis Blues and United States Olympian Keith Tkachuk, Brady will bring the family’s trademark grit to Ottawa.

With their first pick in the second round, the Buffalo Sabres tabbed Mattias Samuelsson, the son of long-time Philadelphia Flyers Dman Kjell Samuelsson. The trend continued as the Carolina Hurricanes selected Jack Drury, the son of Ted Drury (as well as the nephew of Chris Drury), 42nd overall followed by Kody Clark, the son of long-time Toronto Maple Leafs’ forward Wendel Clark, whom the Washington Capitals selected five picks later at 47.

The Capitals continued to tap NHL waters with their next pick in the third round taking Riley Sutter, the son of former NHL center Ron Sutter, at 93. Barrett Hayton (Brian Hayton), Arizona Coyotes (5), Jack McBain (Andrew McBain), Minnesota Wild (63), Tyler Madden (John Madden), Vancouver Canucks (68), Jacob Ragnarsson (Marcus Ragnarsson), New York Rangers (70), Jonathan Gruden (Jon Gruden), Ottawa Senators (95), Jacob Pivonka, (Michal Pivonka), New York Islanders (103) and Nikolai Kovalenko (Andrei Kovalenko), Colorado Avalanche (171) were also selected.

Todd Krygier, who played over 500 NHL games after being selected by the Hartford Whalers in the 1988 Supplemental Draft, had two sons — Christian Krygier, New York Islanders (196) and Cole Krygier, Florida Panthers (201) — selected by NHL clubs.

The weekend also produced two significant trades. On Day One, in an effort to creep below the salary cap and get defenseman John Carlson signed, the defending Stanley Cup Champion Capitals shipped goalie Philipp Grubauer and defenseman Brooks Orpik to the Avalanche in exchange for a second round pick (Kody Clark).

Day Two, the Calgary Flames shipped Dougie Hamilton, Micheal Ferland and Adam Fox to the Carolina Hurricanes in exchange for Noah Hanifin and Elias Lindholm.
