MINNEAPOLIS, MN — After losing to Wayzata in the section semifinals two years ago and then again in the finals last season, the Edina Hornets needed this win to overcome what fans have dubbed “The Wayzata Curse” in its trek back to the Xcel Energy Center after a noticeable two year absence.

In this year’s Class AA, Section 6 championship at Mariucci Arena in Minneapolis, the Hornets came in with the mindset of completely dominating Wayzata and did just that with an 8-1 victory to send them back to St. Paul next week.

Edina (26-2), No. 2 in The HockeyClan State Rankings, came out swinging off goals from Demetrios Komountzis, Ben Brinkman, and Max Borst to make it a 3-0 lead heading into the first intermission.

“These kids have had good memories,” Edina head coach Curt Giles said. “They came to finish their goal.”

The second period included even more pouring on from the favorites as Mason Nevers scored only 40 seconds into the second on what was Edina’s fourth goal on eight shots.

Sammy Walker mentioned that it was the team’s preparation that pushed them into overdrive.

“Everyone was ready and came out with the mentality that we weren’t going to take no for an answer,” Walker said.

Wayzata (16-11-1) did not go quietly as Colin Schmidt sniped a shot into the net from inside the blue line to cut the lead to 4-1, but that was nothing compared to the onslaught Edina unleashed as the Hornets added three additional goals in the period with two coming off beautiful 2-on-1 passing plays from Walker to junior Jett Jungels on the power play.

The Hornets would strike once more with a goal from Peter Colby in the third before raising the section trophy.
