The Eastern Hockey League, one of the premier development leagues sending players up the pipeline, has announced big plans to be put into effect beginning next season.

Committed to developing and producing student-athletes with aspirations of advancing to collegiate and professional hockey, the EHL has unveiled plans to become a two-tiered system.

Beginning in 2017-18, the Division II and III leader in direct-to-college advancement will form two tiers: the Eastern Hockey League and the Eastern Hockey League Premier Division.

The Eastern Hockey League will constitute elite, top college-placement players while the Premier Division will be made up of the best Junior B prospects in the game.

“The change comes from a few different viewpoints,” Neil Ravin, the EHL’s Director of PR and Social Media, said. “We want to emphasize our top division, our college placement division and the success our coaches have had when it comes to helping our players realize their dreams (and) we also want to push the USA Hockey Ladder of Development as more and more players continue to climb their way up from the EHL to the NAHL and USHL.

“Of the 645 NCAA commitments, 640 are from our top division,” Ravin said. “We’re separating the two, solidifying ourselves and emphasizing what the EHL is all about.”

The Eastern Hockey League is in its fifth season. For the first two years, one premier division existed. Two years ago it split into premier and elite divisions. Next fall, 16 teams will comprise the Eastern Hockey League with 13 teams across the Northeast set to make up the Premier Division.

“This off-season, we will be launching a second website along with other social media accounts, all in preparation for this upcoming season,” Ravin said. “This is year number five for us, with many more seasons to come.”
