It began as “Restore the Shore” — an effort to help New Jersey residents recover from Superstorm Sandy — and now, in its fourth season, the Jersey Shore/Mikey Strong Tournament is closing in on $50,000 raised for charity.

The New Jersey Devils, in conjunction with the New Jersey Raiders Youth Hockey Organization, will play host to the fourth annual Jersey Shore/Mikey Strong Ice Hockey Tournament — a state-wide youth hockey tournament with games at three different locations around the Garden State including the Barnabas Hockey House in Newark, Howell Ice Arena in Farmingdale and the Armory in Red Bank.

The prestigious tournament, with support from Devils’ Alumni Bryce Salvador and XHockey, is open to kids of all ages with multiple Mite, Squirt, PeeWee, Bantam and All-Girls divisions and will run for two consecutive weekends beginning June 8-11 and concluding June 15-18.

Mike Nichols, a senior forward on the Monroe Township hockey team who came up with the Raiders’ Youth Hockey Organization, suffered a debilitating neck injury when he fractured his C-5 vertebrae in a high school ice hockey game at Skylands Ice World in Stockholm on Jan. 4, 2014. Since then, Nichols has received overwhelming support from the hockey community and that outpour continues as the Devils and Raiders have teamed up to support him while bringing youth hockey in New Jersey closer together.

“Mikey was a player who played for the Raiders for my spring team,” New Jersey Raiders Team Owner and Tournament Director Oktay Armagan said. “When I originally did this tournament four years ago it started out as the “Restore the Shore” Tournament. It got a lot of attention. But after Mikey got hurt, we felt for his family, we wanted to do something positive, make it mean something and raised $38,000 over the first three years.”

In 2014, there were 28 teams in the tournament. Armagan saw that number nearly double to 54 teams in 2015 before jumping to 72 teams last year.

“It’s been growing year by year,” Armagan said. “Last year we raised $6,000. My goal is to raise another 12 and hit the $50,000 marker. Opening weekend, there will be games at all three rinks.”

From June 8-11, Mites A/B, Squirts and PeeWee AAA/AA/A/B Divisions will skate with tournament championships to be held Sunday, June 11 at Howell Ice Arena. From June 15-18, Bantam, Midget U-16, Midget U-18 and Girls U-19 AAA/AA/A/B Divisions will vie for titles with championship games set for Sunday, June 18th.

Each game will consist of three 12-minute periods. Registered teams to the USA Hockey-sanctioned event guarantee players at least three games, and up to five depending on performance in the playoffs with awards presented to each division champion. All registered participants will receive a voucher valid for two (2) tickets to a 2017-18 New Jersey Devils regular season home game, T-Shirts and a free gift from XHockeyProducts.

“The Devils opened up their practice facility and are completely 100 percent behind it,” Armagan added. “We’re very fortunate to have Bryce Salvador coach with the Raiders and are very thankful to the Devils to make this happen.”
