Section V Class A Breakdown

Class A has been tightly controlled by Victor and Fairport who both finished with plenty of Section points compared to other teams. These two teams faced off against each other back on February 14th, the last regular season game for both groups. The Fairport Raiders came away with the victory as the team defeated the Blue Devils 4-1. Senior Jake Mueller led the Raiders with two goals, one being the game winner that came in the third period. This win allowed Fairport to pass Victor in the state rankings as both teams are ranked third and fourth statewide. Last years champions Pittsford Hockey is the fourth seed and will have to face off against Webster Schroeder.

Section V Class B Breakdown

Class B sectional picture is almost a mirror copy of last year’s tournament as Webster Thomas and Spencerport are both heavy favors for this years Class B Championship. #3 Canandaigua, #4 Irondequoit, and #5 Churchville-Chili all remain in the same seeding as last season. Webster Thomas, who finished with a record of 16-2-2 and tied Victor for the Division 1 champion, is coming off a win over Spencerport in which the Titans won 8-3. This game on February 15th, was the last game of the regular season for both teams. The Rangers would only be down by two heading into the third period before Kevin Gabalski would get on the board for the Titans, the leading scorer on Webster Thomas. There would be a total of 16 minor penalties called throughout the game, but Webster Thomas would be the only team to capitalize on the powerplay, which came in the first period. This game is definitely a preview to more to come, as the Titans beat the Rangers last year in the Sectional Finals by a score of 5-3.

Class B Schedule

#1 Webster Thomas vs. #9 Aquinas Institute

Section III Breakdown

SYRACUSE, NY — Section III high school hockey has already kicked off their 2020 Sectionals after teams began competing against one another last week in the Quarter finals. Both Division I and II are into the Semi final rounds after teams were eliminated last week. The finals for both divisions will be held at the Syracuse War Memorial, home of the Syracuse Crunch, on Monday March 2nd.

The 2020 NYSPHSAA Boys Ice Hockey State Championships return to HARBORCENTER in Buffalo with semifinals beginning on Saturday, March 14. HARBORCENTER will also host the finals slated for Sunday, March 15.

Section III Division I

The 10 teams making up Division I in Section III started their sectional tournament with two pre-quarter finals games to decide who would play the number one and number two seeds in the quarter finals. The Syracuse Cougars were once again the number one seed for the second straight year as the group was 11-0-1 in division play right in front of West Genesee who also had an outstanding record of 10-0-2. West Genesee is the only Division I team from Section III that is ranked statewide, as the team is slotted fourteenth overall. But the Syracuse Cougars are the raining State Champions as the team won in the Harbor Center last season. These two teams are the heavy favorites as both teams are coming off of dominating wins in the quarter final round. West Genesee will now host the third seed Fayetteville-Manlius as the Cougars will host the fourth seed which is Baldwinsville. Both Fayetteville-Manlius and Baldwinsville only defeated their quarterfinal opponents by one goal as both games had a final score of 2-1. By the end of Wednesday night, Division I will know which teams will be heading to the War Memorial to face off March 2nd.

Section III Division II

The Division II tournament may contain a few less teams, but the bracket has some common household names as the semi final round begins this week. The six teams making their way into the tournament featured two teams that are at the top of the statewide rankings for Division II. Skaneateles, the 19-0-1 overall team, sits number one in New York state as the group had another tremendous regular season after not losing a game all season. Whitesboro, the second seed in the Section III Division II standings, is currently ranked fourth in the state as the team finished with a 15-4-1 overall record. These two teams are the heavy favorites in this year’s tournaments, as these groups were the only ones with an above .500 division record. Both teams received a bye into the semifinal round, and will both host their opponents as Whitesboro faces off against Clinton on Tuesday. Clinton is coming off a win over New Hartford as the three seed defeated the six seed 4-1. Cortland-Homer, who is traveling to Skaneateles on Wednesday, defeated the Oswego Buccaneers 8-2 in Cortland last week. The Golden Eagles are under dogs coming into this match up as Skaneateles defeated Cortland-Homer two times during the regular season, both scores being 5-1. Once again, Division II will know which teams will be facing off at the War Memorial by Wednesday night.
