The NJSIAA ice hockey tournament, which began in 1976, was an all-inclusive high school sport in New Jersey where public and private schools battled together. Brick Township captured each of the first two state titles beginning with a 3-2 overtime victory over Chatham Township in the inaugural championship.

In 1995, separate “Public” and “Perochial” tournaments where created with a “Tournament of Champions” held to decalre one winner.

In 1998, the NJSIAA finals were held at Continental Airlines Arena in East Rutherford for the first time as the “T of C” continued to be a smash hit for another decade until 2004.

In 2008, separate “Public A” and “Public B” tournaments were created to separate large and smaller-size schools.

Two years ago, a third, “Public C” tournament, was created splitting up the state’s public schools even further.
